Ayurveda is an ancient healing system and massage is featured in the earliest Ayurvedic texts which date back nearly 4000 years. In India it is traditional for babies to be massaged daily from birth to 3 years old, and then once or twice weekly until the age of 6. At about this age, they are taught to show love and respect by sharing a family massage.
Weekly massage within the majority of families continues throughout life to old age. It becomes especially important at times of weddings when the bride and groom need relaxation as well as extra stamina and good health to promote fertility. Pregnant mothers are also massaged before and after the birth of their children to help them cope with all the physical and emotional demands of labour and motherhood.
The idea of Indian Head Massage as a complementary therapy was first introduced into the UK in the 1970's by Dr Narendra Mehta when he arrived here to train as a physiotherapist. He was surprised and disappointed to discover that massage did not form a traditional part of family life, and that even a full body massage did not include the head. He returned to India and developed what we now know as Indian Head Massage.
